A 60-year-old man, Terrence King, has been convicted of murder for intentionally running over and killing a 15-year-old boy in Langley, Middleton. The incident, which occurred on July 22 last year, involved King striking Devon Simmonds-Caines with his car at almost twice the speed limit.
Devon, who was on a stolen e-bike, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene on Rowrah Crescent. King initially claimed he was trying to block the bike and had no intention of causing harm to the teenager.
After a mistrial in January, King pleaded guilty to manslaughter, but a retrial was pursued by prosecutors, resulting in his recent murder conviction. The courtroom erupted in loud cries upon the announcement of the verdict.
During the trial, it was revealed that King made a deliberate decision to drive towards Devon in an act of temper or outrage, without activating his brake lights. The collision was described as a deliberate act with fatal consequences.
King admitted driving at excessive speed without braking but maintained he did not intend to harm Devon or damage the bike. Despite his claims, the jury found him guilty of murder based on the evidence presented.
Prosecutors argued that King’s actions were fueled by rage upon seeing Devon on the stolen e-bike, leading him to fatally strike the teenager. The Crown Prosecution Service emphasized that King’s reckless behavior resulted in the tragic loss of a young life.
Senior Investigating Officer Duncan Thorpe expressed condolences to Devon’s family, acknowledging the profound impact of the incident on their lives. The tragic event has left lasting trauma for Devon’s loved ones and friends.
