Argentina’s vice president has stirred controversy by politicizing her country’s victory over England in the World Cup, asserting Argentina’s claim over the Falkland Islands. Victoria Villarruel, whose father fought in the Falklands War, shared a photo of Argentine players holding a banner on the field with the message “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (The Malvinas belong to Argentina). Following the match, she emphasized the sentiment, stating that the Falklands are Argentine despite attempts to suppress their expression at the stadium.

While FIFA prohibits political displays at matches, the Argentine national team openly supported the claim. After defeating Switzerland in the quarter-finals, some players were heard dedicating their wins to the Malvinas, Diego Maradona, and Lionel Messi. Leading up to the recent game, Ms. Villarruel posted about the Falklands, emphasizing the significance of the match against the “usurping pirates.”

The match, which became intense with on-field altercations, saw players, including Messi, holding up the banner in support of Argentina’s stance on the Falklands. Despite Argentina’s dispute with British sovereignty over the islands, tensions remain high since the conflict in 1982, resulting in significant casualties on both sides.

The Falkland Islands, initially claimed by the British in 1765, remain a point of contention. In a 2013 referendum, the islanders overwhelmingly chose to maintain their status as a UK overseas territory. The historical and political complexities surrounding the Falklands continue to spark debate and division.
