Keir Starmer reassured Ukraine of unwavering British support even after his term at Downing Street ends. During his visit to Kyiv, he made this commitment to President Volodymyr Zelensky before handing over leadership to Andy Burnham next Monday.

President Zelensky honored the Prime Minister with Ukraine’s highest foreign award, the ‘Order of Freedom,’ at the beginning of their joint press conference. The UK has stood firmly alongside Ukraine in the face of Russia’s unlawful aggression, instilling confidence in Kyiv despite the upcoming change in British leadership.

Addressing the press, Mr. Starmer emphasized the consistent and steadfast backing of Ukraine by the UK since the conflict’s inception. He highlighted the unity across party lines and within the British populace in supporting Ukraine’s fight for freedom and democracy, values deeply cherished and defended by the people.

Acknowledging the significant symbolism of the Ukrainian flag flying above Downing Street and in various locations across the UK, Mr. Starmer expressed the enduring solidarity of the British people with Ukraine’s cause. He pledged ongoing support, stating that the UK would stand by Ukraine both during and long after the conflict.

Following the award presentation, Mr. Starmer expressed his surprise and gratitude, emphasizing the meaningfulness of the recognition. President Zelensky underscored the importance of strong alliances with leaders like Mr. Starmer and President Macron in Ukraine’s struggle.

Despite concerns about leadership changes in the UK and France, President Zelensky stressed the paramountcy of maintaining strong inter-country relationships amidst the ongoing conflict. Mr. Starmer reassured him of the UK’s unwavering commitment, affirming that the strong bond between the nations would persist.
