Keir Starmer was given a standing ovation as he concluded his final Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs), marking the end of his political journey. Members of Parliament from various parties paid their respects to the outgoing PM, with Starmer expressing his commitment to supporting Andy Burnham privately if requested. The emotional session witnessed many MPs and advisors visibly moved, with Starmer receiving warm applause from most Commons members except the Tories, who remained seated.

Prior to his last PMQs, Starmer held his final Cabinet meeting where his colleagues presented him with farewell gifts, including a vintage carriage clock bearing a plaque commemorating his dedication to positive change. Additionally, he was gifted two bottles of wine, one of which was served during a previous state visit. Starmer bid farewell during his final session, reflecting on his six-year journey from defeat to victory and expressing pride in the country’s progress during his tenure.

Starmer extended gratitude to House staff, civil servants, his political team, parliamentary colleagues, and the public for their support and dedication. He emphasized his commitment to assisting his successor and wished everyone good health and happiness. Recognizing the impact of his government on people’s lives, Starmer acknowledged his motivation for entering politics and expressed love for his family.

In a touching moment, Starmer thanked Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch for her kindness during personal challenges, highlighting her support during difficult times. Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle commended Starmer for his public service and international leadership, particularly his support for Ukraine. Tears were shed by several MPs during the session, including Chancellor Rachel Reeves and Labour MP Carolyn Harris.

Andy Burnham is set to succeed Starmer, having secured overwhelming support from Labour MPs. Starmer will vacate No10 to make way for Burnham and hopes to witness an English victory in the World Cup as his final act in office. His legacy, including support for Ukraine and the Hillsborough Law, is being emphasized in his remaining days as PM.

During Starmer’s final Cabinet meeting, David Lammy praised him as a significant figure in the Labour movement, acknowledging his dedication to the national interest, work ethic, and resilience. Lammy applauded Starmer’s enduring contributions to the party and the nation, highlighting his place as a prominent figure in political history.
