Police in South Wales have given an update on a situation where a man, reportedly armed with a crossbow, was shot by armed officers following reports of threatening behavior. The incident took place on St Edward Street after police responded to a call at 11:55 pm on Friday, July 10. The 21-year-old man was shot by officers using a police-issued firearm and received medical attention before being hospitalized. According to recent information, the man is in stable condition.

Authorities have referred the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) for investigation. The man, a resident of Newport, has been arrested on suspicion of affray, threats to kill, and possession of an offensive weapon. He is currently in police custody at the hospital while inquiries are ongoing.

Deputy Chief Constable Nicholas McLain reassured the public that the incident was isolated, with no ongoing risk to the wider community. He emphasized the rarity of firearms-related incidents in Gwent and highlighted the professionalism and training of firearms officers. The discharge of a police firearm is considered a last resort in situations where there is a significant threat to officers, the individual in question, or the public.

Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information, including CCTV or dashcam footage, to contact the police referencing log number 2600220612. Additionally, individuals can provide information anonymously through Crimestoppers.
