A court appearance is scheduled for a woman facing arson charges as two major wildfires continue to burn on the outskirts of Manchester. Firefighters are actively combating the blazes at Dovestone Reservoir in Oldham and Tintwistle Moor near Glossop, where significant incidents have been declared.
The billowing smoke near the scenes has raised concerns about the local air quality. A 20-year-old woman, Shania Care-Slede from Market Street, Hyde, has been apprehended on suspicion of arson related to the Dovestone wildfire. She is charged with aggravated arson, endangering lives recklessly, and dangerous driving. Care-Slede has been detained and is set to appear in Manchester Magistrates’ Court on July 14.
Authorities have stated that the charges are linked to the ongoing investigation into the Dovestones Reservoir fire. They are actively pursuing leads to identify any other potential individuals involved. The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service responded to the Dovestone fire on Saturday night and escalated the situation to a major incident on Monday to contain the flames amid hot weather conditions.
The fires at Dovestone and Tintwistle have engulfed several areas in Greater Manchester in smoke. Fire crews are tirelessly working to manage the situation. The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service reported deploying approximately 70 firefighters, 11 fire engines, and four wildfire units to combat the flames.
Detective Inspector Andrew Day emphasized that while one person has been charged, the investigation is ongoing to identify any additional suspects. He urged the public to provide any relevant information or footage to assist with the inquiries. The wildfire at Tintwistle, which started nearly three weeks ago, has already consumed an area equivalent to 350 football pitches. Firefighting operations are expected to continue for an extended period. Care-Slede is not linked to this second fire incident.
