Levi Bellfield is under scrutiny in connection to the brutal deaths of Lin and Megan Russell, with authorities planning to gather a new DNA sample from him. The notorious criminal previously confessed to the attack on Lin, a 45-year-old mother, her daughter Megan, aged six, and her surviving daughter Josie, nine at the time. The tragic incident occurred as Lin was walking her children home from school in Chillenden, Kent, on July 9, 1996.

Bellfield, currently serving a life sentence for other murders, is scheduled to have his DNA collected by an official from the Criminal Cases Review Commission for a forensic analysis using modern testing methods. Meanwhile, Michael Stone, who was convicted for the Russell murders, has also provided a fresh DNA sample for examination.

The ongoing investigation aims to determine the truth behind Bellfield’s confession regarding the Russell killings, which he later retracted. Efforts include utilizing advanced DNA testing techniques to reanalyze crucial evidence from the crime scene. Samples from the murder scene, including items like a bloodstained shoelace and tapings from the victims’ bodies, are being prioritized for testing to uncover any new DNA evidence.

Stone, who maintains his innocence, was identified as a suspect post a Crimewatch appeal and has been seeking to clear his name. The latest developments in DNA analysis offer hope for a potential breakthrough in solving the long-standing mystery surrounding the tragic deaths of Lin and Megan Russell.
