A bit over 15 years ago, Ann Widdecombe made a shift from the political scene to a more peaceful rural setting. In 2010, the outspoken political figure left London for the serene village of Haytor on Dartmoor. Seeking a quieter lifestyle amidst the picturesque Dartmoor landscape, she purchased a secluded five-bedroom chalet-bungalow away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
However, the tranquil abode she chose for her retirement has now become the focal point of a homicide inquiry. Authorities in Devon have confirmed the tragic death of the 78-year-old former Conservative minister turned Reform UK politician and television personality due to severe injuries at her expansive property. A 26-year-old white British male has been apprehended on suspicion of murder.
In a 2019 interview, Widdecombe expressed her resolve to retire outside of London and opt for a cozy setting with natural views and birdlife. Haytor, indeed, fits the bill perfectly. Isolated from urban amenities, life in this secluded village stands in stark contrast to the fast-paced environment of SW1.
With only one hotel in the vicinity and the nearest M&S Simply Food store over five miles away, the city of Exeter lies more than a 40-minute drive from her residence. Widdecombe enjoyed the desolate beauty of the Dartmoor hills, reveling in solitary walks without encountering another soul throughout the day.
Describing her relocation, Widdecombe mentioned, “I selected a five-bedroom 1970s chalet bungalow near Haytor, on Dartmoor. It was a deliberation between that and the northwest Scottish Highlands, but I deemed the Highlands too remote. Besides, I had always harbored a desire to move to this region. My parents hailed from Devon, so I frequented the area as a child, exploring Dartmoor.”
Despite stepping back from Westminster, Widdecombe remained active in the public eye. She participated in reality shows like Celebrity Big Brother and Strictly Come Dancing, and even ventured into pantomime. Until her demise, she continued making regular visits to London for appearances on GB News.
The earnings from her involvement in Strictly Come Dancing helped her realize a long-held dream of installing a heated swimming pool at her expansive Dartmoor estate. She shared, “I had always wished for a heated swimming pool, and I achieved it through my participation in Strictly Come Dancing. People often inquire about the number of laps I swim, but for me, it’s more about relaxation than exercise. I have friends and family who prefer doing 40 laps before breakfast… Oh, spare me.”
The peace and quiet of Widdecombe’s retirement haven have now been shattered by the tragedy of her suspected murder. A Sky News helicopter hovers above her residence, while uniformed officers and media personnel gather outside. Inside, forensic teams are diligently working to unravel the final moments of a woman who led an extraordinary life in the realm of politics.
