A large crowd gathered to honor a teenage police officer who tragically lost her life in a road accident while responding to another crash.
PC Jess Turnbull, aged 19, was fatally struck by a car as she attended the scene of a two-car collision. She was hit by a vehicle that struck her patrol car while she and her colleague were outside the vehicle, resulting in her sustaining fatal injuries.
The funeral procession for PC Turnbull took place on Friday, with her coffin being escorted to Newcastle Cathedral by horses, pipers, and motorcycle outriders. An honor guard of officers from various police forces across the UK lined the route as scores of uniformed police officers stood outside the cathedral, which was closed off to traffic for the funeral procession.
Leading the parade were seven pipers and a drummer, followed by four mounted officers. PC Turnbull’s coffin, draped in a union flag, was carried into the church by more uniformed officers while the pipers performed “Amazing Grace” under the sunny skies.
As the coffin was brought through the main door, PC Turnbull’s police hat was placed on top, and Northumbria Chief Constable Vanessa Jardine saluted as dignitaries and family members followed the procession inside the church.
A coroner recently detailed the events leading to PC Turnbull’s death, explaining that she was responding to a collision on the A189 near Cramlington when she was struck by another vehicle while implementing a road closure. Despite efforts from emergency services, PC Turnbull succumbed to her injuries two days later.
Northumbria Police reported that a 73-year-old Mercedes driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail. PC Turnbull had only been with the force since September.
