A man, described as “cruel” and “calculating,” has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for attempting to murder his estranged wife by hitting her with a car and then beating her with a baseball bat. Laurence Worville, 51, was found guilty by a jury at Hull Crown Court for the vicious attack that occurred in Hull on May 7 last year. The victim suffered severe injuries, including a broken leg, a deep head wound, and a fractured finger, requiring a 10-day hospital stay.
Worville, who had recently been released from prison, located his wife by obtaining mail redirection details from his former workplace at Royal Mail. He had a history of violence towards her, having served time for previous assaults. During the trial, Worville expressed anger over his wife’s neglect of his koi carp while he was incarcerated.
The CCTV footage of the incident was described as “truly horrifying” by Judge John Thackray KC. It showed Worville deliberately driving his car into the victim, pinning her against railings, and then assaulting her with a baseball bat. Passersby intervened to stop the attack, preventing further harm to the victim.
Worville had breached a restraining order by approaching his wife, whom he was prohibited from contacting. Despite claiming remorse through his lawyer, Worville’s actions and lack of genuine regret were evident throughout the trial. The victim, in her impact statement, expressed ongoing fear and physical scars from the traumatic event.
The judge sentenced Worville to 24 years in prison with an additional four years on license, citing him as a significant danger to the public. Those who intervened on behalf of the victim were praised for their bravery and will receive commendations for their actions.
Detective Inspector Helen Collier emphasized Worville’s premeditated and violent intent, highlighting his callous disregard for the victim’s well-being. Worville’s denial of attempted murder, despite overwhelming evidence, further demonstrated his dangerous and deceitful nature.
