New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani referenced Egypt’s World Cup defeat against Argentina during a public address on Wednesday. Egypt’s 3-2 loss to Argentina in the last-16 round has garnered significant attention in the football community due to a controversial VAR decision that disallowed a goal by Egypt. Despite Egypt scoring shortly after, Argentina staged a remarkable comeback in the final 20 minutes to secure a 3-2 victory. This defeat led to speculation of foul play, with one Egypt player suggesting the World Cup may have been manipulated.

During the announcement of a new initiative to improve bus speeds in New York City, Mayor Mamdani highlighted the benefits of the “Next Stop: Better Buses, Faster Service” plan, emphasizing how it would positively impact the daily lives of New Yorkers. Drawing a parallel to Egypt’s heartbreaking exit from the World Cup, Mamdani stressed the importance of time saved through efficient transportation.

Following the match, several members of the Egypt squad and the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) expressed dissatisfaction with the officiating. The EFA lodged a formal complaint against the referee and his team, citing concerns about the use of VAR and questionable decisions that influenced the game’s outcome. Egypt’s head coach also criticized FIFA for allegedly favoring Lionel Messi and Argentina during the match.

The EFA’s statement on social media emphasized the need for integrity and transparency in match officiating, particularly in a prestigious competition like the FIFA World Cup 2026. The controversy surrounding the match has sparked discussions about fairness in sports and the impact of refereeing decisions on the game’s outcome.
