A German palliative care physician has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of 15 individuals by administering a deadly mix of sedatives and setting fire to some of their residences to conceal his actions. The 41-year-old, known as Johannes M to comply with privacy regulations in Germany, was found guilty by a Berlin court for the deaths of 12 women and three men during house calls spanning from September 2021 to July 2024. The victims, ranging from 25 to 94 years old, had their homes set on fire by the perpetrator on multiple occasions to mask the killings.

Judge Sylvia Busch mentioned that the documented 15 murders might just be the beginning, with authorities currently probing the deaths of 76 additional individuals. Johannes M was labeled a “serial killer” by the presiding judge in what was described as a perplexing and exceptional case. Due to the severity of the crimes, the court decided against a review of the sentence after 15 years and ordered preventive detention post his incarceration along with a prohibition from practicing medicine in the future.

Prosecutors stated that the doctor’s actions were driven by a desire for murder with no other apparent motive. The mother of the youngest victim, a 25-year-old woman who perished in 2021, expressed her grief in court, emphasizing that her daughter had not indicated any desire to end her life. The court determined that Johannes M deliberately administered substances that led to respiratory failure and subsequent death within a short span of time.

In a series of events on July 8, 2024, the perpetrator killed a 75-year-old man in Kreuzberg and a 76-year-old woman in Neukolln, with his attempt to set the latter’s residence ablaze failing. Johannes M admitted to the killings in court, expressing regret and acknowledging the suffering he caused. Concerns regarding his activities initially arose from care services, prompting a police inquiry that resulted in his arrest in August 2024.

Initially focusing on four cases, investigators discovered a rising number of suspicious deaths linked to Johannes M. Reports suggest that if the additional deaths are confirmed as homicides and the perpetrator is convicted, he could be recognized as one of Germany’s most prolific serial killers.
