The United Kingdom is set to spearhead a £37 billion initiative aimed at developing advanced long-range missiles capable of striking deep within enemy territories, responding to the escalating threat posed by Russia.

During a recent NATO summit in Turkey, Keir Starmer, in conjunction with twelve allied nations, will introduce plans to increase funding for innovative precision weapons capable of targeting locations up to 2,000km away with exceptional accuracy.

Mr. Starmer is scheduled to engage in high-level discussions concerning Ukraine, defense, and broader security issues in what is expected to be his final summit as Prime Minister before handing over leadership to Andy Burnham on July 20.

In response to pressures from Donald Trump, European leaders are intensifying efforts to bolster military capabilities, with the U.S. President criticizing countries for relying on American defense resources. Mr. Trump’s arrival in Turkey has raised concerns among allies regarding defense spending and their reluctance to participate in potential conflicts with Iran.

NATO members are striving to maintain Mr. Trump’s involvement in the defensive alliance, committing last year to allocate 3.5% of GDP to defense by 2035 to appease him.

Concerns have emerged within Downing Street over potential critiques of the UK’s defense investment strategy, which lacks specifics on achieving the set targets.

Amid uncertainties surrounding U.S. support, the UK and its allies face pressure to bridge gaps in defense capabilities as the Russian threat intensifies.

Long-range missiles have played a crucial role in Ukraine’s defense strategy, enabling Kyiv to weaken enemy forces beyond the front lines and target critical infrastructure to undermine Vladimir Putin’s military operations.

The UK will participate in the Precision Strike Missile program with the U.S. and Australia, equipping the British Army with a supersonic ballistic missile capable of reaching targets up to 500km away.

Collaborating with Germany, the UK aims to expedite the development of stealth and hypersonic missiles with a range of 2,000 km by the 2030s. Additionally, partnerships with France and Italy are focused on creating a successor to the storm shadow missile capable of neutralizing enemy naval vessels and air defenses.

In a statement unveiling the new initiative, the Prime Minister emphasized the commitment to enhancing European NATO for the safety of the UK and its allies.

Defense Secretary Dan Jarvis highlighted the UK’s investment in cutting-edge precision strike weapons to ensure long-term security, emphasizing readiness and equipping military personnel with necessary technology.

At the summit, the PM will underscore the significant threat posed by Russia, citing a 30% increase in military activities around UK waters in the past two years. The UK remains prepared to defend its allies against potential threats.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper emphasized the importance of deep precision strike capabilities in deterring aggressors and enhancing mutual security among the UK and its allies.

To demonstrate increased commitment, Lt Gen Nick Perry will assume the role of Commander Joint Force Command Norfolk in September 2026, marking the first appointment of a British officer to this position responsible for NATO operations in various regions.
