“DNA Testing on Dog Leash May Exonerate Convicted Killer”

A man convicted of the murder of Lin Russell and her daughter Megan may find evidence to prove his innocence through the examination of a dog leash. Michael Stone, the convicted individual, is scheduled to have a fresh DNA sample taken during a prison visit by a miscarriage of justice investigator. This initiative is part of a new forensic review coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the tragic murders in Chillenden, Kent.

One key item under scrutiny in this new investigation is the leash that was attached to the family’s white terrier, Lucy, during the brutal hammer attack that claimed her life. Renowned forensic scientist Angela Gallop has recommended re-examining this exhibit to explore potential DNA evidence that could shed light on the identity of the perpetrator.

The focus of the scientific analysis will involve DNA-17 testing, which can differentiate between male and female genetic material. Additionally, Stone’s saliva will undergo Y-STR testing to isolate male DNA specifically. These advanced techniques aim to compare the genetic material found at the crime scene against potential alternative suspects.

Despite ongoing forensic assessments by the Criminal Cases Review Commission over several years, no testing has been conducted yet. Stone has consistently maintained his innocence throughout his incarceration and believes that DNA evidence holds the key to his exoneration. Gallop’s report advocates for examining various items, including the dog leash, the dog’s teeth, nail scrapings from Lin’s left hand, and a fingerprint from a lunchbox.

Stone, who was convicted based on a disputed cell confession in 1998 and at a subsequent re-trial, received a life sentence in 2001. Notably, no physical evidence linking him to the crime scene was uncovered during the initial forensic examination in 1996. Gallop also recommends analyzing a balaclava found near the murder site, which contained hairs and fibers that did not belong to the victims.

A new forensic strategy devised by experts at the Eurofins laboratory has been shared with Stone’s legal team. The tragic events unfolded as Lin was walking her daughters home from school, culminating in a violent attack that claimed two lives and left one daughter, Josie, with severe injuries.

The investigation into the case has been complex, with witness testimonies and forensic evidence playing pivotal roles in shaping the narrative. The CCRC, though previously rejecting Stone’s case in 2010, has reopened its examination since 2017. Notably, serial killer Levi Bellfield, who confessed to other murders, alleged involvement in the Russell case, but his claims were deemed not credible by the CCRC.
