A child received six rounds of chemotherapy incorrectly following a misdiagnosis by the NHS. Faye Condon, now 12, was initially diagnosed with Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM) at the age of five, a misstep that her mother, Christina, believes has significantly impacted her daughter’s childhood.
Despite doubts about the initial diagnosis, Christina persisted in urging doctors at Bristol Children’s Hospital (BCH) to explore other potential illnesses. Seven years later, Faye was ultimately diagnosed with a form of muscular dystrophy with no available treatment.
Christina, residing in Plymouth, Devon, expressed her frustration, highlighting the toll the misdiagnosis has taken on their lives. She emphasized that with the correct diagnosis years ago, they could have enjoyed a more normal childhood with Faye before she became wheelchair-bound.
The journey of misdiagnosis started when Faye began experiencing difficulties with mobility at a young age. Despite Christina’s concerns and visible symptoms, it took years before the correct diagnosis of de novo Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy (EDMD) type 2 was made by specialists at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in London.
The delayed diagnosis led to unnecessary treatments like chemotherapy, which severely affected Faye’s health. Christina lamented the impact of the misdiagnosis on Faye’s quality of life, noting the rapid decline in her mobility and the limitations it imposes on everyday activities.
In response to the family’s concerns, Professor Steve Hams from Bristol NHS Foundation Trust expressed regret and assured that they would investigate the situation thoroughly with compassion and care.
The case underscores the importance of accurate and timely diagnoses in providing appropriate care and support for patients like Faye.
