Brits planning an Easter escape to Spain have issued a travel alert from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
The government body, which regularly issues safety and other updates on some 226 nations and territories, has flagged up potential disruption for those heading to Tenerife over the bank holiday weekend.
On Thursday, April 17, the FCDO updated its travel advice, urging those in Tenerife to contact their travel operators.
The alert on on Gov.uk reads: “Industrial action is planned in the hospitality sector in Tenerife over the Easter bank holiday weekend.
“If you’re due to travel to Tenerife this weekend, check your operator’s advice and follow the advice of authorities.”
This may disrupt the plans of some UK families who are looking to jet off now that schools are out for the Easter break.
Canarian Weekly reports that the strike, involving around 80,000 hotel workers across Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro, is set for today and tomorrow (April 17 and 18).
Despite attempts at negotiation led by Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo, employees have turned down the latest offer from employers’ associations.
The deal on the table included a 6% pay rise, the introduction of adjustable beds, and plans to set up a discussion forum to tackle ongoing issues by April 30.
The strike is set to cause major headaches for the hospitality industry this weekend, with potential disruptions to hotel services, according to reports.
