Flames have broken out in close proximity to the primary airport in Majorca, accompanied by loud explosions and billowing smoke above the runway.
Palma de Mallorca Airport has been placed on a “pre-alert” status due to the nearby fire, which could potentially disrupt flights to and from the popular holiday destination favored by British tourists.
Witnesses have observed dense black smoke rising from the airport, visible from miles away, prompting residents in the vicinity of the smoke to stay indoors for safety.
Emergency responders, including the National Police and the Palma Fire Brigade, have mobilized to combat the flames. Two firefighters have required medical treatment for smoke inhalation. The fire reportedly originated at the Mercapalma main food storage facility before spreading to parked vehicles, making extinguishing the blaze challenging due to the abundance of fuel present.
As per Flightradar data, 257 flights are currently delayed at Palma de Mallorca Airport. However, there have been no official updates regarding the fire on the airport’s website or social media platforms.
A spokesperson for Aena, the operator of Palma de Mallorca Airport, assured that flight operations remain unaffected at present, despite the ongoing fire incident.
