“Late Sir George Howarth Honored for Public Service Legacy”

Keir Starmer has honored the extensive public service legacy of the late Sir George Howarth, who passed away at the age of 77. Sir George, a former minister, dedicated nearly four decades to serving as a Member of Parliament after his election to represent Knowsley North in Merseyside in 1986. He retired from the Commons during the recent general election in 2024, having represented Knowsley at that time.

The Prime Minister expressed condolences, acknowledging Sir George’s outstanding service to his party, country, and constituents in Knowsley. Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle also mourned Sir George’s passing, highlighting his contributions to the House of Commons and recalling their shared history from the 1986 by-election.

Deputy Labour leader Lucy Powell described Sir George as a deeply committed and respected figure in Parliament, praising his dedication to his community and family over his long tenure as an MP. Anneliese Midgley, the current Labour MP for Knowsley, shared her profound sadness over Sir George’s death and extended sympathies to his family and loved ones.

Colleagues such as schools minister Catherine McKinnell remembered Sir George fondly for his warmth, kindness, and humor, offering support to his grieving family and friends. Throughout his parliamentary career, Sir George chaired debates and committees, showcasing his leadership skills.

Having served as a minister during Tony Blair’s early years in office, Sir George was honored with a knighthood in the 2019 Birthday Honours for his dedicated service to politics and Parliament. The Labour party maintained its stronghold in Knowsley during the last general election, with Ms. Midgley securing a significant victory.

Sir George’s legacy lives on through his impactful contributions to public service and his lasting influence on British politics.
