First Direct will discontinue its First Directory insurance package by the end of this month. Priced at £15 per month, the First Directory offering includes travel insurance, mobile insurance, and breakdown cover. While the product ceased to be available to new customers in 2020, existing customers were allowed to retain their coverage.

However, First Direct has now announced the permanent closure of the First Directory service on July 31. As a result, individuals will need to seek alternative insurance options. Existing travel insurance policies will remain valid for trips booked on or before July 31, 2026, with travel commencing by October 31, 2026.

Regarding mobile insurance, coverage extends until October 31, 2026, for devices purchased on or before July 31, 2026. Similarly, motor breakdown cover will continue until October 31, 2026. It is essential to note that coverage may terminate earlier for policyholders reaching the age of 70, as the maximum age for First Directory policyholders is 69. Nevertheless, customers can continue using their First Direct current accounts without interruption.

In related banking news, Halifax, a fixture on UK high streets for 173 years, is undergoing a rebranding process, with its name being replaced by Lloyds. Halifax branches and customer accounts will transition to the Lloyds brand, with the Halifax brand ceasing to open new accounts. Account details such as numbers and sort codes will remain unchanged, but Halifax customers will need to utilize the Lloyds app for online banking in the near future.

Customers will receive direct communication through trusted channels, including the Halifax app, online banking, email, and postal mail. Lloyds Banking Group has overseen Halifax and Bank of Scotland since 2009, enabling customers of all brands to manage their accounts at any Halifax or Lloyds branch since early 2025.

The rebranding of Halifax branches to Lloyds will be completed by 2027, with assurances from the group that there will be no job losses stemming from the transition. Lloyds Banking Group has announced additional branch closures, bringing the total number of branches across all three brands to 531, with approximately 190 being former Halifax locations.
