Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek experienced a surge of emotions during her match against Alexandra Eala in the third round. The defending titleholder found herself in a tie-break situation against her Filipino opponent and, at one moment, impulsively tossed her racket into her bag.

Eala, who had previously defeated Maya Joint, the conqueror of Serena Williams, took the lead with a score of 4-2 in the tie-break when Swiatek’s outburst occurred, eventually winning the tie-break despite the determined efforts of her opponent.

BBC commentators Anne Keothavong and Jo Durie were visibly taken aback by Swiatek’s performance on the court prior to her reaction as the third seed.

Keothavong remarked, “Swiatek’s performance has been inconsistent throughout this set,” to which Durie responded, “Seeing three consecutive unforced errors like that is quite surprising from Swiatek, who is known for her consistency. She usually plays aggressively and moves up the court, but these errors would not have boosted her confidence.”

Observing Swiatek’s racket throw, Keothavong added, “It has been that kind of day for the world No. 3.”

Swiatek was not the only player to exhibit frustration at Wimbledon this year. Mirra Andreeva also displayed similar behavior during a match against Barbora Krejcikova, drawing attention from the BBC on that occasion as well.

Discussing Andreeva’s racket throw, Annabel Croft commented, “Mirra Andreeva smashed her racket. If it were a wooden box, it would have shattered, but she directed the force into her racket bag. She appeared extremely frustrated as she grabbed her towel, almost sprinting off the court.”

In a post-match interview following her second-round victory against Karolina Pliskova, Swiatek expressed confidence in facing Eala. However, the 29th seed posed early challenges for Swiatek during their match.

Swiatek mentioned, “I am not very familiar with her game on grass. I have seen some of her play. We have faced each other before, so I know her style.”

“She has a tricky game, especially on grass due to the surface’s nature. She plays to her strengths, utilizing rhythm changes and other tactics. I will prepare myself and be ready for the challenge as she disrupts the usual flow of the game with her unique shots.”
