Liz Kendall is determined to eliminate obstacles for women in the technology sector, challenging the predominantly male environment. As the Technology Secretary, she highlighted the perception that only a select few wealthy individuals benefit from tech advancements, particularly noting the success of Silicon Valley tech figures.

An upcoming report by Alma Economics reveals that women in the digital economy could potentially gain an average of £7,000 annually if barriers are reduced. These gains encompass not only increased pay but also improved working conditions, flexibility, and overall work culture. Removing obstacles for women in the digital economy could result in a significant GDP boost of up to £4 billion for the UK, according to the report.

Following a government call for evidence on women’s experiences in tech, it was reported that over 500 individuals and organizations shared accounts of misconduct, harassment, and discrimination in the industry. Ms. Kendall emphasized the need for tech opportunities to be inclusive and accessible to all individuals, not just a privileged few.

Ms. Kendall has already taken steps to empower women in the tech sector, such as introducing a new charter that provides paid family leave and flexible working arrangements for women in research. Additionally, she launched a women in tech taskforce aimed at increasing the representation of women in tech careers by addressing barriers to education, training, and career progression.

The government is also expanding support for individuals looking to re-enter a research career after an extended break for family or health reasons, doubling the number of Daphne Jackson Fellows. These initiatives aim to address systemic issues of bias and discrimination that hinder the career advancement of talented women in various fields.

As she solidifies her legacy on women in tech, Ms. Kendall remains hopeful about the future of science and technology in Britain. Regardless of potential changes in leadership, she remains committed to advocating for a better future for all individuals in the industry.
