Two years ago, Keir Starmer was welcomed by enthusiastic and tired Labour supporters waving Union Jack flags as he made his way to Downing Street for the first time as Prime Minister. On July 5, 2024, the nation awoke to the news of Labour’s significant victory, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. Starmer, who had campaigned on a platform of change, pledged to lead a government that would have a lighter impact on people’s lives following the turmoil of the previous administration.

As Labour commemorates its two-year tenure in power, Starmer’s premiership is nearing an unexpected conclusion with less than three weeks remaining. Internal party conflicts over the controversial appointment of Peter Mandelson as US Ambassador, poor performance in local elections, and ministerial resignations have marred Starmer’s leadership.

Under mounting pressure, Starmer announced his resignation last month, acknowledging the party’s doubts about his ability to lead them into the upcoming general election. The prospect of an Andy Burnham premiership has sparked cautious optimism among some party members, despite recognizing the challenges he may face similar to Starmer’s.

Reflecting on Labour’s time in power, there is a call for a fresh start and a clearer vision from the new leadership. Criticisms of Starmer’s handling of certain issues, such as winter fuel cuts and disability benefit reductions, have led to discontent among Labour members.

The failure to fulfill key promises from the 2024 Labour manifesto, including the introduction of a Hillsborough law, has also disappointed some MPs. Burnham’s commitment to advocating for justice for Hillsborough families is anticipated as he prepares to assume office.

While Starmer’s tenure had some positive moments, his leadership was marred by mistakes that overshadowed his achievements. The lack of a cohesive narrative and failure to effectively communicate government decisions were key challenges faced during his term.

Looking ahead, the focus is on articulating a compelling vision for the country and building a society and economy that align with Labour’s values. Burnham’s storytelling abilities and connection with voters are seen as assets that could guide the government through difficult decisions in the future.

As Labour transitions to a new chapter under Burnham’s leadership, there is a collective hope that the momentum gained in the past two years will continue, bringing about positive changes for the nation.
