A British police helicopter pilot faced a terrifying situation while on a mission to track down suspected enemy drones believed to be under Kremlin control. The pilot had to swiftly maneuver the helicopter in a dive near a military base in Suffolk to evade the drones that were reportedly launched from a shadow fleet tanker in Hull.

The pilot was tasked with investigating drone sightings above RAF Lakenheath in November 2024, a base housing American nuclear weapons. Several high-level Cobra meetings were convened following these incidents, which also occurred at RAF Fairford, RAF Mildenhall, and RAF Feltwell.

According to a source cited in The Times, the pilot had genuine concerns about a fatal crash, expressing fear that the drones could bring down the helicopter. During the operation, the helicopter’s commander, from the National Police Air Service, observed red flashing lights on the drones, indicating potential threats to the Lakenheath airfield.

Intelligence experts have officially accused Vladimir Putin of deploying spy drones over Royal Air Force bases and UK nuclear facilities. A report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies revealed that drones conducted surveillance over sensitive US military bases in the UK for a sustained 15-month period.

The report highlighted the presence of the HAV Dolphin, a Russian cargo vessel crewed by Russians, near Hull during some of the drone incursions. It concluded that the drones’ activities across European airspace showed Russia’s ability to breach NATO airspace without triggering a collective response.

The report emphasized that Russia’s success was based on exploiting Europe’s air-defense system’s vulnerability to unconventional threats. A Whitehall source mentioned the sophistication and speed of the drones, indicating that the perpetrators were not amateurs, though attribution remained uncertain.

The Ministry of Defence reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding military bases and personnel, emphasizing collaboration with allies and law enforcement to enhance drone defense capabilities. Through the Armed Forces Bill, the UK aims to empower defense personnel to counter drone threats effectively and has made significant investments in counterdrone technology.
