A woman has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her husband after claiming he accidentally fell on a small knife in their kitchen. Daryl Berman, 72, was found guilty of killing her husband David Berman, 84, who suffered a fatal chest wound at their Prestwich home last year.

During the trial at Minshull Street Crown Court, Berman maintained her innocence, stating that the incident was a tragic accident. However, the court sentenced her to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 12 years, deducting the 192 days she spent in custody.

The judge highlighted the lack of a truthful account from Berman regarding the events leading to her husband’s death. Despite her previous nurturing behavior, it was concluded that she lost her temper, leading to the fatal attack on her husband.

In a victim impact statement, Mr. Berman’s daughter expressed the ongoing trauma and grief caused by her father’s death at the hands of Berman. The court heard that the couple had a long, loving marriage with no history of violence.

Authorities became suspicious of Berman’s actions following her husband’s death, noting her emotionless demeanor. Despite her claims of an accidental injury, further investigation revealed evidence pointing towards a deliberate act of violence.

The court learned that Mr. Berman, who had been in good health despite his dementia, suffered a fatal wound that was inconsistent with an accidental fall. Berman’s arrest on suspicion of murder came after a post-mortem examination raised concerns about the nature of her husband’s injuries.

In a statement, Detective Inspector Alex Wilkinson emphasized the betrayal of trust and the tragic loss of an elderly man’s life due to the actions of someone close to him. The court concluded that Berman’s crime was not premeditated but a result of a brief, violent outburst.

The sentencing aims to provide a sense of justice to Mr. Berman’s family as they continue to cope with their loss and begin the process of moving forward from the tragedy.
