A teenager has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 17 years for intentionally driving into and causing the death of a mother of three outside a bar. Kian Bateman, 19, was driving under the influence of nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, when he struck Shelley Davies, 38, during a confrontation outside the Cardiff venue.

Following a trial at Cardiff Crown Court, Bateman was convicted of murder for the incident that also left Shelley’s partner, David Bratcher, with serious injuries. The court heard that on the night of the tragedy, Bateman had been at a club with friends before returning in his mother’s car and encountering a tense situation outside.

Witnesses testified that Bateman, witnessing a dispute involving his brother, drove his car into the group, hitting Ms. Davies and Mr. Bratcher. Despite Ms. Davies tragically succumbing to her injuries later in the hospital, Bateman initially fled the scene but turned himself in the next day.

Mrs. Justice Stacey, presiding over the case, highlighted Bateman’s reckless actions, noting that while he may not have intended to harm Ms. Davies, his deliberate act of driving at Mr. Bratcher resulted in her death. The court also heard statements from Ms. Davies’ family describing her as a compassionate individual and the devastating impact of her loss on their lives.

In defense, Bateman’s lawyer emphasized that the intention was not to kill Ms. Davies but to harm Mr. Bratcher, citing the lack of premeditation and the defendant’s young age and learning disability. Despite expressing remorse and having no prior criminal record, Bateman was found guilty of murder and causing harm while driving dangerously.

Prosecutors emphasized that the evidence presented clearly showed Bateman’s deliberate use of his car as a weapon, leading to tragic consequences for Ms. Davies and others involved. The sentencing included a lengthy prison term, a driving ban, and the requirement to undergo an extended re-test.

Detective Superintendent Mark O’Shea of South Wales Police expressed condolences to Ms. Davies’ loved ones and praised the community and witnesses for their support during the investigation. The tragic incident has left a lasting impact on those affected, underscoring the importance of accountability and justice in such cases.
