During his visit to Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders as part of Royal Week in Scotland, the King participated in a traditional ball game that dates back to 1704. The game, known as hand ba’, involves men wrestling in the streets. Dressed in a stylish grey suit, the monarch initiated the game by tossing a leather ball into the air among local men in the town square.

The game, which divides participants into two teams – the Uppies and the Doonies based on their town residence, is part of the town’s annual Jethart Callant festival. During the festival, a pipe band led a procession of horses through the main street, followed by the Callant, a young man chosen to represent the town.

After the procession, the Callant and his group danced a traditional reel in front of the King, accompanied by the music of an accordion, while spectators clapped along. The King also visited local businesses, a market, and the Jed Shed, engaging with members and participating in carpentry activities.

The royal visit attracted large crowds, with locals showing enthusiasm and support. Charles interacted with various individuals, including Shaun Carroll from the Jedburgh Royal British Legion and Julie Gallagher, an estate agent. Stallholders, like Emma Tennant, expressed delight at the King’s interest in their work, particularly in supporting the local bee population.

The visit marked the first royal presence in the town since 2006, with Charles receiving a warm welcome from the community. The King’s engagements in Scotland, including the visit to Jedburgh, are part of a series of events undertaken by the royal family during Royal Week in Scotland.
