Andy Burnham has confirmed that he will not seek an early general election if he assumes the role of Prime Minister and has committed to maintaining the state pensions triple lock system.

Expected to take over from Keir Starmer as the leader of the Labour Party later this month, Burnham stated that his primary focus will be on fulfilling the promises outlined in Labour’s 2024 election manifesto. Despite Labour’s significant victory at the polls just two years ago, some opposing parties have called for a snap election as the country gears up for a change in leadership.

During an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit, Burnham was asked about calling for an election, to which he responded that he intends to work towards the objectives set in the 2024 manifesto.

Regarding the debate on the pensions triple lock policy, which guarantees that pensions rise by the highest of average earnings, inflation, or 2.5%, Burnham reaffirmed his commitment to honoring the policy as outlined in Labour’s government plan.

Labour MP Callum Anderson echoed Burnham’s stance, emphasizing the importance of respecting manifesto commitments while encouraging open discussions on ensuring a secure retirement for all citizens in the future.

As Burnham is poised to be elected as the Labour leader on July 17 unopposed and subsequently become Prime Minister three days later, he also assured that the defense investment plan introduced this week will be adequately funded.

In response to inquiries about his approach to foreign policy as Prime Minister, Burnham pledged unwavering support for countries like Ukraine and expressed his intention to build on the existing efforts to strengthen trade relations with Europe.
