A father with a strong passion for fitness uncovered his renal cancer diagnosis after a routine blood test while preparing for a significant fitness event. David Ruttledge, residing in Dublin, Ireland, learned about his condition as he was gearing up for a TRYKA relay earlier this year. During a standard test in October, it was noticed that his kidney markers were abnormal, prompting his GP to request a follow-up test that also showed elevated levels.
Following this, his doctor arranged for an ultrasound to investigate further. While engaging in the fitness challenge with his wife, sister-in-law, and brother-in-law, David was in the midst of medical appointments. Despite the shocking news, he has managed to raise substantial funds for the Irish Kidney Association and remains determined to continue his efforts.
Reflecting on his journey, the 43-year-old expressed his initial disbelief upon receiving the diagnosis. After undergoing multiple scans and tests, David had a successful partial nephrectomy on March 3, where surgeons were able to remove the tumor while preserving a portion of his kidney.
Grateful for the unwavering support from his family and friends, David highlighted the importance of early detection and the care provided by healthcare professionals throughout his treatment. To mark his recovery and raise awareness, he is taking on another TRYKA challenge, emphasizing the significance of the event beyond physical fitness.
