Two teenagers tragically lost their lives in a bungee jumping accident while their parents witnessed the horrifying incident unfold. This occurrence took place at the Beach Bungee attraction in the Grand Strand area of North Myrtle Beach/Atlantic Beach, South Carolina, United States.

Involved in the incident were 17-year-old Zachary Steinke and 19-year-old Michael Nash, who was a “bungee jump master” and an employee at Beach Bungee. The attraction boasted a towering 175-foot archway that lifted visitors in a cage resembling a lift.

The two teenagers were raised inside the steel jump cage to a height of approximately 150 to 160 feet, unknowingly using a malfunctioning chain-driven lifting system. The owners of Beach Bungee had opted to replace the defective system with a makeshift commercial shrimping equipment, combined with a wire rope, rather than installing a proper replacement.

The inadequate system led to the tragic deaths of the two individuals. The incident occurred on a wet and rainy evening on August 10, 1993, resulting in poor visibility as the cage ascended. The wire rope failed under the strain, causing it to snap, leading to the cage plummeting 150 feet to the ground, resulting in fatal injuries for Zachary and Michael.

Following the tragedy, a legal battle ensued, with attorney John Kassel representing the families. The cable snapped due to the lack of safety mechanisms in the bungee jump winch system, leading to the fatal fall of the cage. The families were awarded a $12 million judgment against the individual owners of Beach Bungee in 1995 for their negligence in ensuring safety measures.

Moreover, Kassel pursued a case against the South Carolina Department of Labor for its oversight in regulating the attraction. Despite challenges, a $2 million verdict was obtained and upheld by the South Carolina Supreme Court. This legal victory provided some measure of justice for the families affected by the tragic incident.
