The UK’s commandos are in line for a substantial £500 million increase as part of adjustments to the long-awaited defense investment strategy. This boost will involve the introduction of high-speed boats and strike drones to enhance the elite force, with a specific focus on the High North region, which encompasses the Arctic Circle and neighboring areas, in response to escalating Russian presence in that vicinity.
Defense Secretary Dan Jarvis has reportedly secured an additional £1 billion for the defense investment plan (Dip), supplementing the initial £13.5 billion proposal that led to the resignation of his predecessor, John Healey, in dissent. The Dip, originally scheduled for release last year, faced delays due to internal government disputes over the necessary military funding.
Mr. Healey stepped down from his Cabinet position earlier due to his dissatisfaction with the proposed £13.5 billion supplementary investment, which he deemed insufficient. Since assuming office as Defense Secretary, Mr. Jarvis has reportedly redirected the Dip’s expenditure focus towards equipping frontline troops with necessary gear.
Funds will be allocated towards new high-speed commando insertion craft, designed for covert troop transport by the rapid-response force, potentially for operations such as seizing Russian shadow fleet tankers. Additionally, about £100 million will be earmarked for innovative technologies, including unmanned vessels, advanced communications systems, and strike drones.
Mr. Jarvis highlighted significant advancements in recent days, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to ensure accuracy and completeness before the expected publication of the Dip by July 7. He stressed the importance of delivering the latest equipment to frontline forces to support their critical missions in an increasingly hazardous global environment.
