A woman was denied boarding a flight during a heatwave for wearing shorts and a crop top that airline staff deemed too revealing. Edda Pilz, also known as Edda Elisa online, was stopped at the gate while trying to board a Lufthansa flight as the temperature soared over 30C.
The 25-year-old had chosen to wear sportswear to stay cool, but she encountered resistance from a Lufthansa employee who informed her that her outfit was inappropriate for the flight. The employee allegedly remarked that she looked “naked” and could not proceed.
Edda recounted that when she questioned the decision, she was told she needed to cover up before boarding. She complied by putting on a jacket, which she was then instructed to zip up entirely before being allowed onto the aircraft.
Expressing her willingness to follow rules, Edda sought clarity on the airline’s dress code requirements. Lufthansa responded by stating that the language used by their staff did not align with company standards and clarified that passengers must dress appropriately for public travel without causing discomfort to others on the journey.
The airline highlighted the importance of passengers wearing attire suitable for communal travel experiences and emphasized the discretion allowed to staff in enforcing these guidelines. Lufthansa assured that any reported discrepancies in application would be reviewed internally to maintain consistency.
Edda eventually boarded the flight after adjusting her attire as per the airline’s instructions. Airlines globally retain the authority to refuse passengers wearing attire deemed offensive or inappropriate under their regulations, citing reasons such as conflict prevention, safety considerations during emergencies, and hygiene concerns. The interpretation of what constitutes “appropriate” clothing often relies on individual staff discretion.
