Human remains thought to be those of a missing teenager have been discovered in a river, prompting a murder investigation.
Taylor Charlton, aged 15, was last sighted on May 8 near Tarka Leisure Centre and the Seven Brethren car park in Barnstaple, Devon. He was observed walking towards the River Taw, with authorities and local organizations searching for him over the past six weeks.
The human remains were located in the river close to Sticklepath on Thursday, June 25, coinciding with the arrest of a man on suspicion of murder. Police responded to the scene at approximately 4.20pm on Wednesday, June 24, where the remains were retrieved from the water.
Although formal identification is pending, Taylor’s family has been notified of the discovery. Devon and Cornwall Police stated, “We recognize the impact this news may have on the local community and urge the public to refrain from speculation, awaiting updates from the authorities in due course.
“There will be a continued presence around the river today as emergency services conduct further investigations.”
On June 12, a 20-year-old man was apprehended on suspicion of murder. He was subsequently released on police bail.
