A mother who escaped a fire at her home, believing her son and grandfather had also fled, is seeking answers about the fire’s origin.
Firefighters discovered John Morris, 72, deceased on his bed, with 8-year-old Aurelian Kamp underneath. Aurelian, known as Baby to his family, was rushed to the hospital but tragically passed away approximately an hour later.
The mother, Tahia ‘Ty’ Kamp, managed to escape with her two older sons after being alerted by her mother around midnight on November 3, 2025, in Connecticut, US.
Initially, the North Haven Fire Department attributed the house fire to an “accidental smoking-related” cause. However, a subsequent incident report labeled the cause as “undetermined after investigation.” Ty, the grieving mother, is now seeking clarification regarding the fire’s circumstances.
Recalling the harrowing night, Ty, an assistant director at Yale University, mentioned being awoken by her mother’s cries, signaling the fire outbreak. Despite her efforts to rescue her loved ones, the flames hindered her from reaching John and Baby in time.
As the firefighters arrived around 12:30 am, Aurelian was swiftly transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital but succumbed to the injuries by 1:30 am.
Reflecting on the loss, Ty described Baby as brilliant and kind, adored by all, while John was a beloved figure in their lives. She finds solace in the notion that they passed together, emphasizing their strong bond.
Questioning the initial account provided by the fire department, Ty highlighted discrepancies between the immediate statement attributing the fire to a cigarette and the later report deeming the cause inconclusive.
Expressing disappointment in the rushed judgment by the Fire Chief, Ty emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to honor the memories of Baby and John.
Despite attempts to seek clarification, the North Haven Fire Department has not yet responded to inquiries.
