France has confirmed its first case of Ebola, as a doctor who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo tested positive for the virus. The doctor was on a humanitarian mission and contracted the virus during the current outbreak.

The patient is currently in isolation, and authorities are conducting contact tracing. The French Ministry of Health stated that the risk to the general European population is low.

The Ebola outbreak in Congo, which has seen over 1,000 cases and 267 deaths, has the highest number of confirmed cases in the first month of any Ebola episode, according to the World Health Organization. Tracing individuals who have had contact with infected patients remains a significant challenge.

In Congo’s Ituri province, where the outbreak was declared on May 15, a total of 100 people have recovered. The Ministry of Health reported that 365 patients are currently in hospitals or isolation.

The Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus, which lacks vaccines or treatment, is the most severe in its initial month. Authorities fear there may be more undisclosed cases, with the peak of the outbreak yet to come.

Local authorities are struggling with contact tracing, achieving only a 55% coverage rate. Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director-General of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, emphasized the importance of identifying the index case to control the outbreak effectively.

Efforts to trace the origins of the outbreak are hindered by ongoing violence in eastern Congo, with attacks by rebel groups disrupting access to villages and displacing populations. Officials believe that the disease is outpacing response efforts, and the true extent of the outbreak remains unknown.

At the Kigonze displacement camp in Bunia, where over 20,000 displaced people live, officials reported ten deaths in suspicious circumstances within a week, sparking concerns of a potential outbreak. Although no Ebola cases have been confirmed at the camp, the unusual death rate has raised alarms.

The UN refugee agency has highlighted that over 2 million forcibly displaced individuals, including 320,000 refugees, are residing in Ebola-risk areas in Congo.
