Andy Burnham is set to promise economic growth and uphold Labour’s budget regulations as he aims to bolster his financial credibility post Sir Keir Starmer’s departure, positioning himself for a likely entry into No 10.

The former Mayor of Greater Manchester is anticipated to address fiscal policy next week, following his return to Parliament after winning the Makerfield by-election. Talks are ongoing about potentially reshaping the Cabinet, with Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood being considered as potential successors to Rachel Reeves as chancellor. However, Burnham’s supporters clarified that no appointments have been finalized yet as of Monday evening.

The path to the top position for Burnham appeared more certain as his main opponent, former health secretary Wes Streeting, endorsed him to succeed Sir Keir. Nonetheless, Darren Jones is reportedly contemplating entering the race, which could complicate matters for Burnham, especially with reports suggesting that Starmer loyalists are urging Jones to run.

Sources close to the Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister indicated his reluctance to join the race currently but mentioned that he would seek assurances on economic policy, amid concerns about potential market instability.

If Burnham secures the necessary support to stand unopposed, he could become prime minister by mid-July. In a heartfelt statement outside No 10, the Prime Minister acknowledged losing the backing of his MPs and pledged a smooth transfer of power to his successor.

Expressing confidence in his legacy, he vowed unwavering support for the incoming leader, acknowledging the progress made during his tenure. Sir Keir proposed a timeline for the appointment of a new leader by September 1, to be decided by Labour’s National Executive Committee.

However, the selection of a new leader could occur sooner, with nominations closing on July 16. Prospective candidates have until that date to secure the backing of at least 81 Labour MPs. Sir Keir and his wife Victoria hosted No 10 staff for drinks in the garden, expressing gratitude for their support.

Burnham commended Sir Keir’s contributions to the country but characterized his resignation as the start of a transitional phase. Emphasizing the importance of looking ahead with confidence and purpose, Burnham pledged to lead the Labour movement towards renewal for the party and the nation.
