An infamous festival in a city in southern China, known for its consumption of dog and cat meat, has reemerged despite facing widespread opposition locally and internationally.

The Yulin Lychee and Dog Meat Festival has commenced in Yulin, raising concerns from animal welfare advocates who fear the potential slaughter of thousands of animals before the event concludes on June 30.

Since its inception in 2010, the 10-day festival has been heavily criticized for over a decade. Local authorities distanced themselves from the event starting in 2014 due to the backlash it received.

Reports indicate that thousands of dogs and cats endure long, grueling journeys in harsh conditions, often deprived of food and water, before being killed at the festival. At its peak, approximately 10,000 animals were slaughtered and consumed.

Activists have highlighted that dogs and cats are either stolen from their homes or forcibly taken from the streets. Images released by campaigners show terrified animals confined in wire cages without access to essential necessities.

Recently, Humane World for Animals shared footage depicting the intensified dog and cat meat trade in Yulin, stressing the cruel treatment these animals endure. The group urged China to abolish the inhumane practice and address the public health risks associated with the trade.

Critics argue that the festival, coinciding with the summer solstice, symbolizes the broader issue of the dog and cat meat industry.

In a positive development, nine dogs were rescued by animal activists, including some wearing collars, suggesting they were likely stolen pets.

Ongoing national and global advocacy efforts have reportedly led to a decrease in the number of dogs killed during the festival’s peak period, estimated to be around 2,000 to 3,000 dogs currently.
