Iran has exited peace talks in Switzerland after the country’s delegation refused to continue negotiations until an apology is issued by US President Donald Trump for what was perceived as a threat to assassinate Iran’s negotiating team. Trump’s remarks, as reported by Fox News, included warnings to Iranian officials about consequences if they were to close the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian delegation viewed these statements as a direct assassination threat, leading them to demand an apology from Trump before resuming discussions.
Additionally, Iran has requested Israel to withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon in conjunction with Trump’s apology as conditions for returning to the peace talks. The escalating tensions stem from Iranian military figures announcing the closure of the Strait of Hormuz due to alleged violations of a fragile peace agreement between Iran and the US. Iranian officials have confirmed their withdrawal from negotiations through a statement released via the state-backed Iranian news agency Tasnim.
The statement by the Iranian delegation emphasized their protest against Trump’s verbal threats and highlighted that any form of threat violates the existing ceasefire agreement between the two nations. Despite the statement, it remained unclear which specific remarks by Trump were considered threatening. In a subsequent phone call, Trump responded to statements by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian regarding uranium enrichment, warning Iran to be cautious and insinuating potential actions against the country.
Before Iran’s withdrawal from the peace talks, US Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner had been engaged in discussions with senior Iranian officials alongside mediators from Qatar and Pakistan to finalize details of the peace agreement. Despite initial positive progress, objections from Tehran following Trump’s recent statements have now jeopardized the newly established peace agreement.
The situation underscores the fragility of diplomatic efforts and the impact of inflammatory rhetoric on international relations, highlighting the need for constructive dialogue to achieve lasting peace.
