An update from Network Rail has been released regarding the recent train collision near Bedford, which tragically resulted in the death of a train driver and injuries to around 100 passengers.

In response to the incident, a temporary road has been constructed beside the railway tracks to facilitate the deployment of cranes for a complex recovery operation. Two 110-tonne rail-mounted Kirow cranes will be used to lift the train carriages, which will then be transferred by a road-mounted crane onto a specialized trailer designed for heavy equipment transportation.

Subsequently, the carriages will be relocated from the site via road transport, according to Network Rail’s confirmation. Following the removal of the damaged trains, engineers will assess the track, perform necessary repairs, reinstate the overhead lines, and conduct final safety checks to prepare for the railway’s reopening.

Network Rail stated, “A sophisticated recovery effort is underway to clear the railway of damaged trains and carriages, followed by track assessment, repair work, and reinstatement of overhead lines.” The removal of overhead line equipment is essential for the operation, necessitating the construction of a temporary access road and concrete foundation to support crane activities.

The train driver who lost his life in the collision has been identified as Shaun Burton, a 60-year-old professional who joined East Midlands Railway in 2019. Described as a dedicated and respected railway worker, Burton’s passing has deeply affected colleagues and passengers.

During the incident, 100 passengers sustained various injuries, with nine individuals in critical condition. The crash occurred on Friday afternoon near Bedford when the East Midlands Railway service from Corby to London St Pancras collided with the Nottingham to London St Pancras service.

Network Rail has advised travelers expecting to pass through Bedford in the coming week that disruptions will persist until June 28. Consequently, there will be no Greater Thameslink Railway services north of Luton and no East Midlands Railway services south of Bedford.
