“Pressure Mounts for UK PM as Calls for Resignation Grow”

After narrowly escaping a political crisis related to the Peter Mandelson scandal in February, Keir Starmer has been projecting a resolute stance. Despite facing pressure, the Prime Minister has reaffirmed his commitment to remain in office, emphasizing that a leadership contest would lead to instability. Starmer has consistently highlighted that voters granted him a five-year mandate to implement the promised reforms following Labour’s significant victory in 2024.

This stance was reiterated during the Mandelson scandal, following Labour’s setback in the May local elections, and even after Andy Burnham’s successful by-election triumph in Makerfield, which injected optimism among Labour MPs regarding the defeat of Nigel Farage’s Reform UK.

Addressing Labour staff recently, the PM cautioned against internal strife that could destabilize the party and the nation, emphasizing the need to avoid repeating past mistakes. However, despite these assertions, recent developments indicate a shift in the party’s sentiment, with more MPs, including those who previously supported Starmer, now calling for his resignation.

Notably, support from the Cabinet is waning, with senior ministers like Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper and Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander joining the chorus urging Starmer to step down. Following Burnham’s victory, there has been a conspicuous absence of unified backing for the PM’s position from the Cabinet, primarily met with silence.

In a significant development, Peter Kyle, representing the government, refrained from ruling out the possibility of the PM stepping down soon during a recent media appearance. He mentioned that Starmer is evaluating the “political realities” stemming from Burnham’s win, hinting at a potential decision within the next 24-48 hours.
