A man with two children who believed he had elevated cholesterol levels was shocked to discover he had terminal cancer just days before Father’s Day. John Thorncroft, aged 58, underwent a routine blood test and anticipated no serious issues when he received his results in June 2023. However, he was blindsided by the news of his cancer diagnosis.
Initially assuming the call back regarding his results was related to high cholesterol, John was taken aback by the unexpected revelation of blood cancer. Recounting the pivotal phone call that altered his life, John shared how he was informed of his chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) diagnosis just before Father’s Day.
Despite feeling physically well, engaging in regular exercise and maintaining his health, John was faced with the harsh reality of his illness. The news deeply affected both him and his family, especially concerning how to inform his children, including his 17-year-old autistic son, Jack.
Acknowledging the challenges of disclosing his condition to his children, John expressed his struggle with feeling vulnerable and letting down his family. Blood cancer ranks as the UK’s third leading cancer killer and fifth most prevalent cancer, affecting a significant number of individuals annually.
After educating himself about his illness and seeking professional advice, John sat down with his children to explain the implications of his blood cancer diagnosis. Following the emotional revelation, the family, including John’s wife Sally, planned a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords to spend quality time together post the distressing news.
John, now retired, is under active monitoring, awaiting treatment only when symptoms manifest due to the slow progression of his cancer. Two years post-diagnosis, he faced mental health challenges and sought counseling to regain a positive outlook on life post the impact of cancer on his future.
Father’s Day holds special significance for John’s family as they celebrate his newfound role as a grandfather. The occasion will be commemorated with a meal and cherished family time, underscoring the importance of togetherness and appreciation for each moment shared.
