Government officials have been cautioned against utilizing a particular social media platform due to concerns about spreading false information. Attorney General Richard Hermer reportedly instructed his office to cease posting updates on this platform, marking the first instance of a government department discontinuing its use of Elon Musk’s contentious platform. According to reports from The Guardian, officials are now required to use the site solely for combatting disinformation, as there are worries that this platform is being exploited by malicious actors to incite discord and create divisions within communities.

Recently, far-right individuals have exploited this platform to incite violence, notably in response to tragic events such as the death of Henry Nowak and a knife attack in Belfast. The riots in Belfast, characterized by masked individuals targeting minority ethnic communities, were condemned as a “pogrom” by a Northern Irish MP.

Elon Musk, the platform’s owner, has been criticized for his association with far-right figures like Tommy Robinson and for promoting extremist views. Last year, Musk interfered in British politics by advocating for a general election and the dissolution of Parliament while aligning himself with Robinson. Musk further encouraged protest and violence, warning his followers that they must fight against what he termed the “woke mind virus.”

Keir Starmer had previously threatened to block the platform in the UK over concerns regarding its features that could potentially facilitate the creation of inappropriate content. Tech companies are now mandated under the Online Safety Act to assess and mitigate the risk of users encountering illegal content on their platforms.

Recent controversies surrounding the platform include reports of its AI bot generating objectionable content, such as uncensored videos of celebrities like Taylor Swift without any prompt. Tech outlet The Verge reported on the bot’s capability to produce NSFW content and celebrity deepfakes through its ‘spicy’ video mode.
