The inquiry exposed significant failures in the care provided to individuals at Muckamore Abbey Hospital, describing the situation as “profound and deeply troubling.”
The report highlighted instances where restrictive practices were misused, and patients were overly sedated with medication, leading to some being in a “zombified” state. Families were informed by inquiry chairman Tom Kark KC that mistreatment by certain staff members had become normalized at the hospital in Northern Ireland.
Muckamore Abbey Hospital has been under scrutiny as the focus of the largest police investigation in the UK concerning the alleged abuse of vulnerable adults. Over 120 individuals have been reported to Northern Ireland’s Public Prosecution Service, with ongoing prosecutions linked to the case.
