After the cremation of a loved one, it is common for family members to keep the ashes in an urn at home to feel a sense of closeness. When Dorothy Kuspis passed away at the age of 98, her granddaughter Ashleigh Wegner decided to follow this tradition. Ashleigh, along with her mother and uncles, selected a heart-shaped keepsake urn for her grandmother, known affectionately as “Nanny,” and ordered it from Amazon.
Upon receiving the urn, Ashleigh noticed that it seemed to have been in storage for some time as it was slightly dusty. However, upon further inspection, she discovered that the urn still contained some remains from a previous use, despite being advertised as new.
Feeling shocked and uncomfortable by this unsettling discovery, Ashleigh promptly contacted Amazon and the third-party seller who supplied the urn. She expressed her concern about the possibility of the urn being resold to another unsuspecting customer in a similar situation.
Amazon quickly responded to Ashleigh, assuring her of a refund, although she is still awaiting a response from the third-party seller. In the meantime, she received a replacement urn where she safely transferred her grandmother’s remains, keeping a small portion for close relatives.
Reflecting on the incident, Ashleigh mentioned that while the discovery was unexpected, she was not entirely surprised, as she had previously encountered a box of ashes in an alleyway years ago. In that instance, she and her husband had taken it upon themselves to scatter the ashes in the Arizona mountains.
In this latest situation, Ashleigh plans to handle the mystery ashes found in the urn similarly, ensuring that they are respectfully disposed of to prevent any inadvertent mishaps in the future. Despite reaching out to Amazon for a response, the company has yet to provide any feedback on the matter.
