Children as young as 14 are undergoing treatment for social media addiction, according to a prominent rehab executive. The escalating cases involve youths seeking help from psychiatrists due to their reliance on engaging apps like TikTok and Instagram. In an exclusive interview with the Mirror, Jan Gerber, the founder of Paracelsus Recovery, emphasized the severity of the situation, labeling it as a widespread epidemic.

Gerber highlighted the manipulative nature of algorithms crafted to exploit the brain’s reward system through dopamine-inducing activities. He expressed concern over the susceptibility of younger, still-developing brains to the allure of digital engagement tactics, likening it to a form of “digital crack cocaine.”

Although Gerber shared that he receives inquiries from parents of even younger children, legal limitations prevent him from treating individuals under 14 at his facility in Switzerland. He noted a concerning trend of young patients succumbing to excessive online gaming, leading to significant financial burdens on their families from in-game purchases like loot boxes.

According to Gerber, signs of social media addiction in children can manifest through increased screen time, social withdrawal, and abandonment of hobbies, ultimately hindering their social connections. Overcoming this addiction is described as challenging but achievable, with recent successes at the clinic using a therapeutic approach involving playing style cards to assist patients in managing and expressing their emotions.

In response to the rising concern, Australia enforced a ban on social media use for individuals under 16 in December. Additionally, Prime Minister Keir Starmer is anticipated to announce a similar restriction for under 16s using popular platforms such as Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok. Gerber cautioned against a complete ban, suggesting that regulating screen time to one hour per day could be a more pragmatic approach to mitigating the issue.

Gerber underscored the necessity for governmental intervention to establish necessary regulations, emphasizing the impracticality of relying solely on self-regulation. As discussions on addressing social media addiction continue, the focus remains on implementing measures that balance protection with fostering responsible digital habits among children.
