A man is supporting The Mirror’s ‘Save Lives for Sam’ campaign after his father tragically drowned within a minute while attempting to rescue their pet dog. Robbie Jones shared the heartbreaking story of how his father, Gareth Jones, lost his life in a swift and tragic incident off the coast of Hove, East Sussex. Since the incident, Robbie has taken on the role of a water safety advocate, educating students about the importance of water safety and endorsing The Mirror’s campaign.
Reflecting on the incident, Robbie expressed his deep pain and disbelief at the sudden loss of his father. He emphasized the importance of understanding the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, even watching CCTV footage of the event to come to terms with the reality. Gareth, a former BBC HR department head, had been playing with his dog on the beach when a series of unfortunate events led to the tragic outcome.
Robbie recounted the sequence of events that unfolded, leading to his father’s untimely death in the water near Millionaire’s Row in Brighton. Despite Gareth’s swimming abilities, the circumstances quickly turned fatal, highlighting the unpredictable dangers of the sea. The community rallied together to search for Gareth and their dog, ultimately finding the dog on Brighton Beach and Gareth’s body miles away at Tide Mills.
The emotional toll on the family was immense, with Robbie stressing the kindness and warmth of his father, whose loss deeply impacted those who knew him. Robbie, now residing in Cardiff, has taken it upon himself to raise awareness about water safety, particularly emphasizing the importance of not risking one’s life to save a pet or loved one in distress. He urged people to prioritize safety, call emergency services when needed, and trust in the expertise of trained professionals in water rescue situations.
Ashley Jones, the Head of Water Safety and Education at the Royal Life Savers Society UK, echoed the sentiment, cautioning against impulsive rescue attempts without proper training. Instead, Jones advised the public to call emergency services and utilize safe methods for assisting individuals or pets in water emergencies. It is crucial to prioritize safety and rely on trained professionals to prevent further tragedies in the water.
