The spouse of Rob Burrow expressed admiration for Kevin Sinfield as it was confirmed that he is to be knighted. The Mirror reported exclusively that the rugby legend and fundraiser for Motor Neurone Disease, Kevin Sinfield, aged 45, will receive the honor in this weekend’s King’s Birthday Honours. This recognition is for his remarkable dedication in memory of his late friend and former Leeds Rhinos team-mate, Rob, who succumbed to the muscle-wasting disease at 41 years old two years ago.
Kevin, known as Kev, has engaged in numerous challenging marathons, raising an impressive £11 million for MND charities over time. Rob’s wife Lindsey conveyed congratulations to Kevin on his knighthood, emphasizing his immense contributions not only to Rob but also to the wider MND community through awareness campaigns and fundraising efforts.
In his illustrious career, Kevin captained Leeds Rhinos to an impressive 15 major honors during his 18-year tenure before retiring in 2015. Following Rob’s MND diagnosis in 2019, Kevin embarked on charity marathons, stating his deep honor and gratitude for the award on behalf of the rugby and MND communities.
Kevin expressed his commitment to supporting the MND community until a cure is found, highlighting the importance of camaraderie in rugby and the enduring friendships formed both on and off the field. He stressed the significance of raising awareness and funds to aid MND patients and research, emphasizing the ongoing battle against the disease.
Recognized with an MBE in 2014 for his outstanding playing career and an OBE in 2021 for his MND advocacy, Kevin, along with Rob, received a CBE in 2024 for their significant contributions to the MND community and Rugby League. The investiture was conducted at Headingley Stadium by Prince William.
Tragically, Rob passed away five months after being diagnosed with MND, leaving behind a legacy of courage and resilience. Leeds Rhinos Chief Executive, Jamie Jones-Buchanan, lauded Kevin for his well-deserved recognition, praising his character and impact on the sport.
Kevin has announced his final 7 in 7 challenge, “The Grand Finale,” where he will run from Hull to Manchester, visiting all 12 English Super League grounds along the way. The challenge will culminate with an ultra marathon each day, finishing before the Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford in front of 70,000 fans.
