Tech companies are facing a strict deadline from the Metropolitan Police to enhance security measures on stolen phones or risk government intervention. This ultimatum coincides with a recent collaboration between the police force and Apple to disrupt criminal networks involved in phone theft. By sharing intelligence on stolen devices, both parties aim to track the movement of stolen phones and reduce their value in the criminal market.

The Metropolitan Police’s initiative follows a prolonged campaign highlighting the rise of phone theft as a lucrative global criminal activity. Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley emphasized the need for urgent action by tech firms to prevent stolen phones from being resold and reused. The collaboration with Apple has already shown positive results by devaluing stolen phones and deterring theft.

Recent investigations by the Met revealed a significant mobile phone smuggling network trafficking thousands of stolen devices to China. Additionally, a crackdown in Westminster led to a 50% decrease in phone theft, resulting in numerous arrests and the recovery of stolen phones. The force’s efforts aim to dismantle criminal operations and create a safer environment for mobile phone users.

In addition to the partnership with Apple, the Metropolitan Police has urged the government to enforce legislation requiring phone companies to disclose data on stolen devices. They have also called for the implementation of technical standards to render stolen phones unusable if industry initiatives fall short. Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, stressed the importance of industry cooperation in combating mobile phone crime on a global scale.

By taking decisive action and fostering collaboration between law enforcement and technology companies, the initiative seeks to curb phone theft and enhance overall security measures in the mobile phone industry.
