Reform UK’s George Finch is under investigation for his stance on removing books related to “contested gender ideology” from libraries. The youngest council leader in Britain, Cllr Finch, expressed concerns about libraries promoting political ideologies, labeling them as divisive. Following complaints from residents about certain children’s books, he announced plans to develop a new policy. However, Warwickshire Pride lodged a formal code of conduct complaint against him, stating that his remarks marginalized the LGBTQ+ community.

Reform councillor Mike Bannister clarified that there was no evidence of staff actively endorsing specific literature. He assured that the proposed policy would undergo thorough discussions with the libraries team. In an interview with BBC Coventry and Warwickshire Radio, Cllr Finch clarified his position, emphasizing his focus on books dealing with transgender issues rather than sexuality.

Despite declining to specify the titles of concern, Cllr Finch emphasized the importance of teaching children values over gender identity topics. The recent complaint against Cllr Finch by Warwickshire Pride is part of a wider concern about his rhetoric. The group urged him to retract his statement and engage in dialogue. In response, the Liberal Democrat group expressed support for Warwickshire Pride, advocating for libraries’ independent decision-making on book selections.

Councillor Sarah Boad voiced opposition to regressive actions in Warwickshire, while Out Out Groups UK criticized Cllr Finch’s stance as a political attack. Labour MP Rachel Taylor criticized Cllr Finch for potentially infringing on parental rights to determine their children’s reading materials. She highlighted the historical context of censorship in libraries and urged a focus on delivering better public services.

The controversy echoes past debates like Section 28, a law from 1988 restricting the promotion of homosexuality in schools and councils. The ongoing discussions underscore the importance of inclusive policies and access to diverse information in public spaces.
