British tourists are being advised about a state of emergency declared in a Caribbean nation due to ongoing violent crime and criminal activities. The government of Trinidad and Tobago put the emergency measures in place on March 3, granting authorities enhanced powers of search, arrest, and detention. Although there are no curfews or movement restrictions, the UK Foreign Office has updated its travel guidance, urging caution for travelers. While the FCDO is not discouraging visits to the country, tourists are reminded to be vigilant, comply with police and local authorities, and stay informed about the situation.

Despite no recent terrorism incidents in Trinidad and Tobago, the FCDO warns of possible attacks, which could target locations frequented by foreigners. Visitors are advised to stay alert, follow local news updates, and heed advice from authorities. Precautionary measures include avoiding wearing headphones in public, refraining from walking in poorly lit areas or at night, securing valuables, and being cautious when using ATMs or exchanging currency. Travelers are also cautioned about their social media activity, as criminals may monitor online platforms.

Particular areas in the country are experiencing an increase in violent crimes and robberies, with gang-related incidents, shootings, homicides, and armed robberies on the rise. Travelers should exercise extra care, especially in high-risk zones. Criminal activities in Trinidad and Tobago range from violence and theft to more severe offenses like sexual assault, kidnapping, and murder, often linked to gang-related activities.
