In Ibiza, a British tourist was apprehended by authorities for possessing 42 bottles of laughing gas and associated paraphernalia in his vehicle. The arrest occurred on June 1 in Sant Josep de Talaia when Guardia Civil officers, during routine checks, discovered seven large boxes and the stash of laughing gas in the car.

The driver failed to demonstrate any legitimate commercial or professional connection to the items, prompting law enforcement to detain the Brit on suspicion of committing a crime against public health. Possession of laughing gas under the Public Safety Act on the island carries penalties including fines, arrest, and potential imprisonment ranging from one to three years.

Laughing gas, commonly used as a medical and dental sedative, offers mild pain relief and short-lasting effects, allowing patients to stay conscious during procedures. Recreational inhalation of the gas from balloons produces a rapid euphoric sensation. However, this practice poses risks such as oxygen deprivation to the brain, leading to fainting, dizziness, nerve damage, and in severe cases, fatality.

Reports indicate a rise in the popularity of nitrogen gas in Ibiza and neighboring Majorca in recent years. Despite its dangers, street vendors often target tourists, charging £5 for balloons of the substance.

As British vacationers plan trips to sunny Spanish destinations like Ibiza, they may need to brace for exceptionally hot weather conditions in the coming months. The weather phenomenon El Niño, known for bringing prolonged warmth across the Pacific Ocean every few years, is forecasted to elevate temperatures in Spain, possibly triggering red weather alerts. While forecasts are still under evaluation, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) suggests a potentially intense El Niño event this year, hinting at scorching temperatures ahead.
